How far would you run to escape your past?
For eight strangers in a Los Angeles backpacking hostel, even the other side of the world isn’t far enough.
Oh this place is just delightful,’ replied Eric, making no attempt to disguise his disdain. ‘A bedroom that reeks of stale feet, people falling through ceilings, and German techno music deafening me. What more could I ask for?
The craving for a new identity and the chance to start again is something they have in common.
But the search for a fresh start isn’t as easy as they’d imagined. And they soon discover that it doesn’t matter where you are or who you are – if you can’t lay the past to rest, coincidence, fate and deception have a way of catching up with you when you least expect it.

This starts off fairly slowly while we begin to learn the backstories of each of the many characters. To begin with, I wasn’t quite sure if this was something I wanted to read but I persisted and I’m really glad that I did.
The ten very different characters each have different reasons for ending up at this cheap, run-down hostel in Venice Beach, LA. In true traveller style, they come from all over the world and each has their own story and reason for being there, mostly running from something in their past.
They all interact with each other, some more than others, and their stories develop throughout the book. Part Two brings everything together and is faster-paced, as usual, some twists and turns through some a little unbelievable, too coincidental in places but it doesn’t particularly distract from another great book.
I felt like I got to know each of the characters well and connect with them all, no mean feat when there are so many of them and a testament to great writing.
