Welcome to my review of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Having read this when it was released back in 2015, I wanted to give it another read before the prequel is released later this year.

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends-the Liars-whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
E Lockhart is the author of many novels including the bestselling WE WERE LIARS, a New York Times bestseller, and GENUINE FRAUD. This is a well, though uniquely, written book by E. Lockhart. It was published in 2015, and I had read it before but wanted to reread it before the prequel was released in May.
The plot is intriguing and keeps your interest. However, it is difficult to say too much about it without spoilers or repeating the synopsis, so I won’t try, aside from saying it is about lies, beauty and betrayal. It’s not dark all the way through and manages to seamlessly switch from dark and heart wrenching to warm and uplifting instantly.
The characters were well developed. However, I felt the ‘supporting’ characters and mothers could have been a little fuller. Still, I don’t think this would have been easily possible due to the shortness of chapters and writing style.
There are plenty of twists and things that make this misleading, and therefore, the ending is quite unpredictable but wonderful. The chapters flow well and are pretty fast-paced.
As a side note, the book’s title doesn’t link well with the content. When I researched, it seems that the chapter/s that would have explained this were removed from the book before publication. I don’t think it’s an issue, but I saw it was something many people commented on, so I thought I would mention it.
I would recommend reading it without having read the reviews. They appear to be quite mixed, and I think it lends itself better to a ‘blind’ read before you know what will happen.
I’m really excited to read the prequel now!
