Eye-opening, funny and horrifying Observer
Everyone who has any interest in public life should read it
You may not wish to think about it, but one day you or someone you love will almost certainly appear in a criminal courtroom. You might be a juror, a victim, a witness or perhaps through no fault of your own a defendant. Whatever your role, you d expect a fair trial.
I m a barrister. I work in the criminal justice system, and every day I see how fairness is not guaranteed. Too often the system fails those it is meant to protect. The innocent are wronged and the guilty allowed to walk free.
I want to share some stories from my daily life to show you how the system is broken, who broke it and why we should start caring before its too late.
A SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER FOR 24 WEEKS.
I had read so many mentions and reviews of this amazing book that I really MUST read but this really wasn’t for me. Very very rarely do I abandon a book partway through, and I really tried hard to keep going but I just couldn’t do it.
It totally failed to live up to the hype for me, I found it difficult to read but it just felt like it would never end! There was too much history for me, in paces it felt like being in a lecture hall, a dry and boring one at that, this could have been so much more.
I had such high hopes for this having read so many similar types of books recently, I expected it to be informative and a great insight into being a barrister. While I am sure that, like any job, it’s not an exciting career all of the time, I am sure this could have been an easier read. Something with a little more character and charisma.
Having said all that there are some very valid points inside, about the state of the Criminal Justice System. Unfortunately, instead of making his point and moving on it felt like a long, moany rant about it. It could have been so brilliant and yet, for me, it really wasn’t.
