Playing Away Book Review

Playing Away became an instant bestseller, is irresistible, unputdownable and the nearest thing you’ll get to an affair without actually having one…

SHE’S PLAYING WITH FIRE…

I manfully separate Becky-from-ballet and Tom-from-Tumble-Tots, who are viciously thumping each other to within an inch of their lives. No one else seems bothered that feasibly there could be a bloody and foul murder on Rose’s shag pile carpet. All the mothers are sitting discussing the colour of poo and the texture of Heinz baby food, I think I’ve got that the right way around.
Adele Parks

Connie Green’s life should be perfect. She’s married to gentle, loving Luke, has a good job and really fabulous friends. She thinks she can’t be happier.

But she’s just met John Harding.

Spectacularly unsuitable and overwhelmingly sexy, he’s about to destroy her peace of mind and her happily ever after, yet she just can’t seem to resist.

And to have any chance of clearing her head, Connie needs to get out of John’s bed…

I’ve always dreamed of being a writer and when my first novel – Playing Away – was published the Evening Standard identified me as one of London’s ‘Twenty Faces to Watch’, which was very nice of them!

I like to keep busy and I’ve published 19 novels, and I’m thrilled to say that they’ve all hit the bestseller lists. I’ve sold over 3.5 million books in the UK alone and I’ve been translated into 26 different languages. I have written 17 contemporary novels and 2 historical ones, Spare Brides and If You Go Away, which are set during and after WW1. My latest novels, Lies Lies Lies, I Invited Her In, The Image of You and The Stranger in My Home are twisty, domestic noirs. I like to scrutinize our concepts of family, our theories on love, parenting and fidelity.

I passionately believe that reading is a basic right. I’m a proud Ambassador of The National Literacy Trust and a The Reading Agency, charities that are devoted to encouraging emerging adult readers and children who are becoming passionate about books.

During my career, I’ve lived in Italy, Botswana and London. Now I live happily in Surrey with my husband, teenage son and cat.

I enjoy Adele Parks writing and recently finished Lies, Lies, Lies, so I was excited to see another new book so soon… turns out it’s not so new! First released 20 years ago you can definitely tell how Adele’s style has changed and her writing has improved over the years.

This will transform you back to the ’90s though and the lives of four friends who have known each other for many years. Their lives are in different places and I am unsure how realistic it is that they spend so much time together. They all greatly admire Connie and Luke which feels bit unnatural but perhaps they are living love’s young dream, that is until Connie’s eyes are turned by the stunning John Harding.

While not my favourite of her books, and feeling a little predictable, I still found myself wanting more and to see what happened next. It was nice to find that Lies, Lies, Lies is effectively the third in this story following the same four friends and I found myself moving onto the second in the series (that isn’t written as a series in a conventional way!) and I moved directly onto Young Wives’ Tales!
