Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman Book Review

Welcome to my review of Nick & Charlie by Alice Oseman. This is one of my pride months reads and was an easy choice after reading the heartstopper series recently. I love Nick and Charlie’s world, their friends but especially Charlie’s sister, Tori. My daughter actually purchased this for herself, but I may have stolen it before she got to enjoy it, whoops!

Synopsis

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?

CHARLIE: “I have been going out with Nick Nelson for two years. He likes rugby, Formula 1, dogs, the Marvel universe, the sound felt-tips make on paper, rain and drawing on shoes. He also likes me.”

NICK: “Things me and Charlie Spring do together include: Watch films. Sit in the same room on different laptops. Text each other from different rooms. Make out. Make food. Make drinks. Get drunk. Talk. Argue. Laugh. Maybe we’re kind of boring. But that’s fine with us.”

Everyone knows that Nick and Charlie are the perfect couple – that they’re inseparable. But now Nick is leaving for university, and Charlie will be left behind at Sixth Form. Everyone’s asking if they’re staying together, which is a stupid question – they’re ‘Nick and Charlie’ for God’s sake!

But as the time to say goodbye gets inevitably closer, both Nick and Charlie question whether their love is strong enough to survive being apart. Or are they delaying the inevitable? Because everyone knows that first loves rarely last forever…

My Review

This is a great story about Nick and Charlie. Charlie is struggling, this time with Nick leaving for university. It explores young love, which I remember so well myself, and the insecurities around that, especially feeling like your being left behind when your friends and partner are off to university without you. Brilliantly written as always, Nick is obviously super excited about leaving for uni and the freedom that brings and cant stop talking about it. Charlie doesn’t want to hear about it at all because he’s worried Nick will forget about him and he feels left behind.

Charlie wants Nick to peruse his dreams but the thought of a long distance relationship is just too much, especially after seeing him almost every day for the past two years. There are tantrums, arguments, insecurities, and tears. One little thing, taken out of context and blown out of proportion really knocks their relationship.

The characters are adorable in this book. Nick and Charlie are obviously the central characters but we also see the usual suspects, Charlie’s sister tori and their group of friends. It shows how even the strongest relationships can be tested and pushed to their limits at times, and sometimes completely out of proportion. Emotions run high throughout.

The ending was obviously great too, I won’t give anything away but I loved it. Another great read from Alice Oseman.
