Like Mother, Like Daughter Book Review

If what they said was true, then the grotesque and the monstrous ran in her blood. It was imprinted within her very core, her DNA, a part of every cell in her body.

Kat’s children are both smart and well-adjusted. On the outside.

Serial Killer. It has a ring to it don’t you think? A certain…Prestige. A little thrill that runs up the spine and ignites the imagination at the utterance of those two words.
Elle Croft

Kat has always tried to treat Imogen and Jemima equally, but she struggles with one of her daughters more than the other.

Because Imogen’s birth mother is a serial killer. And Imogen doesn’t know.

They say you can’t choose your family, but what if your family chooses you?

Elle Croft was born in South Africa, grew up in Australia and moved to the UK in 2010 after travelling around the world with her husband. She works as a freelance social media specialist and also blogs about travel, food and life in London. Her debut novel, The Guilty Wife, is a top 10 Kindle Bestseller.

This was a really great book, told from three perspectives of Kat, Imogen and Sally. Kat loves her daughter but is disturbed by her change in behaviour after she disappears one day, you know something is going on and there is a big secret but not what to begin with, as the story goes on the picture becomes clearer and you learn more about their lives and what has gone before. Sally is trapped but has some strong links to the outside which become a big part of the story.

As history unfolds this tells an interesting story around nature and nurture and the true nature of people. There are some brilliant twists and it was difficult to put down. Some great cliff hangers where you find yourself holding your breath as you turn the page and some great psychological insight into the minds of others and how they have been damaged. The characters are well developed, to the point that I don’t particularly like Kat, she’s cold and judgmental right from the off and always on poor Imogen’s back.

The ending is one of the best I have read for ages, leaving thought-provoking questions around whether people are born evil or nurtured to be that way.

The only thing I would like to have known more about is sally’s eldest daughter, she is referred to a number of times, perhaps leaving way for another book, but no real details were given.

Highly recommended, this book should be the first off your to be read pile!
