Welcome to my review of A Wedding in the Country By Katie Fforde. This was a great read, set with the same group of friends as A Wedding in Provence.

1963: Lizzie has just arrived in London, determined to make the best of her new-found freedom.
Her mother may be keen that she should have a conventional wedding in the country to a Suitable Man chosen by her . . . but she definitely wants to have some fun first.
Soon Lizzie has cut her hair fashionably short, bought herself a minidress, and moved in with two of her best friends in a grand but run-down house in Belgravia.
Before long, Lizzie’s life is so exciting that she has forgotten all about her mother’s marriage plans.
All she can think about is that the handsome man she is falling in love with appears to be engaged to someone else . . .
Katie Fforde lives in the beautiful Cotswold countryside with her family, and is a true country girl at heart. Each of her books explores a different profession or background and her research has helped her bring these to life. She’s been a porter in an auction house, tried her hand at pottery, refurbished furniture, delved behind the scenes of a dating website, and she’s even been on a Ray Mears survival course. She loves being a writer; to her there isn’t a more satisfying and pleasing thing to do. She particularly enjoys writing love stories. She believes falling in love is the best thing in the world, and she wants all her characters to experience it, and her readers to share their stories.

I chose to read this book after having finished A Wedding Provence as I wanted to know what I may have missed before, although they are not technically a series, this book is set before A Wedding in Provence and there is a large character overlap. Provence focuses on Alexandra whereas this one focuses on her friend Lizzie.
The plot is mostly set between London and the countryside, mostly in large aristocratic type houses, though often quite run down, aside from the beautiful but very rustic little cottage. The scenery is well described as are the relationships, both friendships and growing romances.
Lizzie’s mother has been planning her wedding since she found out she was having a girl so when the time eventually comes around, much quicker than expected, she is keen to put all those plans into place. Lizzie doesn’t mind aside from being able to design and make her own dress and have her friends make her wedding cake.
I particularly enjoyed the developing friendships between the girls, Alexandra, Lizzie, Meg and Vanessa. David is again one of my favourite characters, it’s so devastating how he has to hide who he is in order to be able to live, he will never get his own happily ever after and yet is so loving and caring of the girls and has his relationships in secret.
The ending was predictably lovely, a real happily ever after. I enjoyed the budding love between Lizzie and Hugo and would love to see more of all of them in the future.
Like the other book, I found this one to be well written and thought out. The characters are well developed, some more so than others but you get a good feel for all of them as you go along.
