Synopsis

Lily, Alice, Grace, and Jem are back in the third and final spellbinding instalment in the Sisters of Shadow trilogy by Katherine Livesey!

She couldn’t work out if it was the world that had changed, or herself…

When lightning shatters the darkness into a blazing jigsaw of panic and pain, Lily and her friends realise they’ve been transported through the jaws of the wild storm right to the gates of Midnight Manor, home of High Priestess of the Shadow Sect herself, Hecate Winter.

But as a swarm of figures in hooded golden cloaks surrounds them it soon becomes clear: the real enemy was never hewn from the shadows but hidden in the light.

A notorious legion of exorcists from beyond their borders, the Brotherhood of Light have been secretly abducting them for generations and indoctrinating them into believing there are good witches and bad witches, all subordinate to the whims of their oppressors.

Now it’s up to them to build a sisterhood strong enough to survive the sunrise.

About The Author

Katherine Livesey is an author of whimsical fiction living in the historic Northumberland countryside. She was born and raised in the wilds of Lancashire and spent much of her childhood running ragged across the moors or lost in a sea of books.

Katherine takes inspiration from folklore, wild landscapes and the classics of the Fantasy genre, as well as the ever-changing but ever-present natural world that surrounds her home. When not writing, Katherine can usually be found knee-deep in mud walking her two dogs with her partner, baking up a storm in her little country kitchen or watching an old favourite period drama.

Her debut novel, SISTERS OF SHADOW, is the first in a trilogy of Young Adult Fantasy novels, and has been described as “Anne of Green Gables” meets Diana Wynne Jones.

My Review

When the sky lit up in a frenzy of fear and chaos, Lily and her friends found themselves face-to-face with an age-old nemesis – The Brotherhood of Light. For generations these infamous exorcists have been snatching away innocent witches for their own purposes, brainwashing them into accepting that some were good while others were bad – all subject to do as they say! But this time it was different; now Lily had the chance to fight back against those driven by light but cloaked in darkness…

The final instalment in Katherine Livesey’s Sisters of Shadow trilogy, Sisters of Midnight, is a thrilling conclusion to the adventure. All familiar characters from the previous books are back and better than ever as they fight for their lives against Hecate and her dark forces. As their journey comes to an end, they must rely on pragmatism and team up with Hecate if they are to survive.

The series focuses heavily on found families, acceptance, and inclusion; making it a heart-warming read for young adults full of lessons about family values. With plenty of excitement and good pacing, you can easily pick up this book without much thought and find yourself instantly immersed in the story.

One of the main themes running through this series is acceptance and inclusion. At its core, this story is about being accepted for who you are – no matter your background or beliefs – and understanding that everyone has something valuable to contribute to society. As such, it serves as an important reminder to readers that we should all strive to be open-minded and tolerant towards others who may seem different from us.

Found families are a major focus throughout the series as well, with each character learning to appreciate the bonds created by their chosen family over blood relations or societal expectations. This teaches readers that family isn’t defined solely by blood relations or social norms; instead, it’s about finding people who share similar values and goals in life that make them feel comfortable being themselves around them. This is an incredibly powerful message for young adults, especially in today’s world where there is so much emphasis on fitting into certain boxes set out by society.

Sisters Of Midnight has a darker tone compared to the other books in the series since we reach the end of their journey here; with stakes higher than ever before as they face Brotherhood of Light’s dark forces head-on. However, even with all the danger that surrounds them they still manage to find moments of joy amongst it all which only adds more depth to this story; reminding us how important it is not just to fight but also to take time out occasionally, to enjoy life too!

If you haven’t already picked up your copy yet, then what are you waiting for? Sisters Of Midnight is an exciting conclusion full of lessons about found families, acceptance and inclusion that will leave you inspired when you put down the book! With plenty of action scenes as well as moments of levity throughout this book will keep you hooked until the very end!
