I'd Rather Be Reading By Anne Bogel Book Review

Welcome to my review of I’d Rather Be Reading By Anne Bogel. I chose this book after stumbling across it on Amazon. I am vaguely familiar with Anne Bogel’s blog and am interested in other people’s reading habits and preferences. This turned out to be a great collection of essays that had me nodding along multiple times.

For so many people, reading isn’t just a hobby or a way to pass the time–it’s a lifestyle. Our books shape us, define us, enchant us, and even sometimes infuriate us. Our books are a part of who we are as people, and we can’t imagine life without them.

I’d Rather Be Reading is the perfect literary companion for everyone who feels that way. In this collection of charming and relatable reflections on the reading life, beloved blogger and author Anne Bogel leads readers to remember the book that first hooked them, the place where they first fell in love with reading, and all of the moments afterward that helped make them the reader they are today. Known as a reading tastemaker through her popular podcast What Should I Read Next?, Bogel invites book lovers into a community of like-minded people to discover new ways to approach literature, learn fascinating new things about books and publishing, and reflect on the role reading plays in their lives.

The perfect gift for the bibliophile in everyone’s life, I’d Rather Be Reading will command an honored place on the overstuffed bookshelves of any book lover.

Anne Bogel is the creator of the popular blog Modern Mrs Darcy and the podcast What Should I Read Next? Her book lists and reading guides have established Bogel as a tastemaker among readers, authors, and publishers. The author of Reading People, shelives in Louisville, Kentucky

I’d Rather Be Reading has a beautiful cover and a small mini-book, making it super cute. I think it would be irresistible if you saw it in a bookshop and of course, it looks lovely on my bookshelf!

I’d rather be reading a very apt title that sums me up very well. Bogel covers numerous issues such as what happens when all your library books come in at once, how to organise your bookshelves and what to do when you find your book twin. There is advice for when you struggle to finish a book or feel guilty for not finishing.

As someone who always has a book (or thousand) in my pocket wherever I go, and who regularly picks up and reads a few pages at every opportunity, it felt like talking to a friend who has the same affliction.

I think my favourite paragraph is about organising your bookshelves. “Stay open to possibility; you’ll change your system soon enough. Some people play tennis in their spare time. Others, knit or scrapbook. You’re a reader; your hobby is organising your bookshelves.’ No more actual words have ever been written. I feel like I spend an excessive amount of time organising my shelves, moving books around, changing the purpose of each bookcase and fitting in the new books, of which, of course, I buy far too many!
