The Serial Killers Wife Book Review

Welcome to my review of The Serial killer’s Wife by Alice Hunter. While billed as a psychological thriller I felt this was more of a cosy mystery, it was a great read though and I wasn’t disappointed.

Every marriage has its secrets…

Beth and Tom Hardcastle are the envy of their neighbourhood – they have the perfect marriage, the perfect house, the perfect family.

When the police knock on their door one evening, Beth panics. Tom should be back from work by now – what if he’s crashed his car? She fears the worst.

But the worst is beyond imagining.

As the interrogation begins, Beth will find herself questioning everything she believed about her husband.

They’re saying he’s a monster. And they’re saying she knew.

After completing a psychology degree, Alice Hunter became an interventions facilitator in a prison. There, she was part of a team offering rehabilitation programmes to men serving sentences for a wide range of offences, often working with prisoners who’d committed serious violent crimes. Previously, Alice had been a nurse, working in the NHS. She now puts her experiences to good use in fiction. THE SERIAL KILLER’S WIFE draws heavily on her knowledge of psychology and the criminal mind.

I chose this book after it was recommended by so many people. I really enjoyed the alternating chapters from two different characters points of view, Beth and Tom. There were more from Beth, and I would have liked to hear more from Tom.

This isn’t your usual thriller plot. It was a little two dimensional, however still enjoyable to read. Tom is possibly the worst serial killer, he doesn’t sound particularly threatening or scary, if anything he comes across as a little pathetic. Beth is a somewhat annoying wife, she is happy to go along with things when it suits her but she plays her part well and there are some good twists towards the end.

Its more of a cosy mystery almost but not quite and Beth has some serious issues going on which makes it more interesting, especially towards the end when you realise how devious she is! The characters could be better developed and more detailed but this didn’t ruin my enjoyment at all. As a fairly light read, this was a nice book.
