The Devils Advocate Book review

A DEADLY PROSECUTOR

They call him the King of Death Row. Randal Korn has sent more men to their deaths than any district attorney in the history of the United States.

A TWISTED RITUALISTIC KILLING

When a young woman, Skylar Edwards, is found murdered in Buckstown, Alabama, a corrupt sheriff arrests the last person to see her alive, Andy Dubois. It doesn’t seem to matter to anyone that Andy is innocent.

A SMALL TOWN BOILING WITH RAGE

Everyone in Buckstown believes Andy is guilty. He has no hope of a fair trial. And the local defense attorney assigned to represent him has disappeared.

A FORMER CON-ARTIST

Hot shot New York lawyer Eddie Flynn travels south to fight fire with fire. He plans to destroy the prosecutors case, find the real killer and save Andy from the electric chair.

But the murders are just beginning.

Is Eddie Flynn next?

This is one of my all-time favourite series. I love Eddie Flynn, so this was an easy choice for my next read!

As usual, we jump straight into the chaos of Eddie’s office, where he is desperate to find a secretary to help organise them all. He is requested to help Andy Dubois defend his murder charge in Buckstown, Alabama, against the formidable District Attorney, Randal Korn. The latter has sent more people to death row than any other DA in the USA.

This has got to be Eddie Flynn’s most challenging case yet. Having left New York City for Buckstown, things are very different, and the town doesn’t give him a warm welcome. Nevertheless, Eddie is defending an innocent, young black man accused of murdering student Skylar Edwards.

This fast-paced plot flows incredibly well with plenty of twists and turns. The inclusion of the white supremacist group, The White Camelias led by ‘The Pastor’ and the corrupt police department, led by Sherriff Colt Lomax, was excellent. Although, this meant that Eddie is highly aware of the dangers he and his team face in what appears to be a case they can’t win, with no evidence of Andy’s innocence.

The main characters carry through the series and have their usual fabulous selves. The new characters are highly developed and well thought out. Andy’s feelings are palpable, as is the love between him and his mother. The corruption of Skylar’s father was incredibly well thought out and described. However, I think my favourite character was Randal Korn. His “smell of death and decay” was so well described that I could almost smell it through the pages! He’s such evil and depraved character that you automatically hate him and his kind. An excellent portrayal of such a person.

As always, Steve Cavanagh has written a great ending. Again, there is a theme of doing good for those he represents and achieving justice and improving their lives. Everything is wrapped up well, and Eddie and his team leave Buckstown a better place that still needs plenty of work, but that will always bear their mark.

I absolutely loved this book. There are some interesting parallels between this and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ showing that there are still some very racist places, which is also very topical now. The bravery of Steve Cavanagh tackling these sensitive subjects is evident, and it has paid off as it makes the book a better read.

The plot is full of hatred, racism, ‘old school’ thought processes and death. Overall, though, is the theme of power and corruption, which runs through the whole town but not least the DA and Police departments. Yet, despite the evil shown, there is a strong feeling of fighting for justice and taking a stand to do the right thing, particularly from Taylor Avery, one of the jurors.

The book is well written and provides a dark and intense read full of suspense and unknowns. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery or thriller but don’t miss out on the rest of this incredible series!
