Meet Hannah Thompson: wife, mother, teacher and… secret erotica author?
My Guilt List:
1. If we have a date night then I’m always asleep before it’s halfway through and honestly, if I had to choose, I’d rather have a hot bath and read my book than engage in any other nocturnal activity.
2. If we do actually have you-know-what then it’s not unheard of for my mind to wander… and I’m not talking about sexy things – I’m talking about what food there is in the fridge and when the car is due for its next service.
3. I am struggling to write about anything that could be classed as even a little bit sexually adventurous which is a problem when I’m supposed to be an erotica writer and I am speaking at Sex Con in exactly one month.
With a book to publicise, Hannah has no choice but trade her M&S cardis for S&M parties, and become her writing alter-ego. What could possibly go wrong…
Rebecca was born in Chester, England in the same year as the three-day week, the world population hitting 4 billion and McDonalds opening their first UK restaurant. Her mother educated her on a diet of T Rex, Adam and the Ants, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and she grew up thinking that Frank Zappa was her dad (sadly untrue). She studied at Exeter University during the heyday of Blur, Oasis, The Offspring and The Spice Girls, when life was sweet and everything cost £1 and has had a variety of jobs that have taken her to some very interesting places, including four years teaching in a Category C male prison.
Rebecca has been attempting to parent since the start of the millennium and currently lives in South-West England with her husband and three children. When not working her day job or frantically writing, she can often be found either engaged in the fruitless pursuit of trying to find a bra that genuinely does its job or the less frustrating pastime of drinking prosecco.
More Than Just Mum is her adult debut.
Faking it follows the story of Hannah, schoolteacher, wife and mum of three, who has secretly written and had published an erotic fiction book, More Than Sex. Following the first in the series (which I haven’t read) Hannah is attempting to write her second book.
Written as a funny, light-hearted summer story the book flows well. the characters are well developed and feel very real but unfortunately, I just found Hannah to be a bit moany! Her concerns over being outed as a “porn” novelist feel real and well expressed, she is very keen to express to those in the know that she hasn’t written porn but an erotic fiction. I felt it didn’t really make for the most relaxing read, especially when sat on a beach trying to forget the real world!
There are some funny moments, the “sexy con” (like comic con but sexy!) was probably the best part but it would have been great to see more of that and less of the everyday hiding from the kids and trying to find her inner sex goddess. It was nice that it dealt with the everyday pressures of life with children, especially teenagers and that felt quite realistic but a little too much at times.
Hannah’s confessions at sexy con were great, she didn’t buy into the hype of the others on the panel and really spoke about how things really are. I also really enjoyed the girl’s night in with her friends and the fun they had. I didn’t feel that the snippets from her writing attempts added to the story and didn’t really enjoy hearing about Bella and Dax.
Overall, this was a nice, light-hearted read.
