The Minders Book Review

Five strangers guard our secrets.
Only four can be trusted…

…their consciousness will be stripped and rebuilt according to the criteria required for a successful deployment. They will be taught to assess all risks and react accordingly to trust no one, and to die or to kill for their country if necessary.
John Marrs

In the 21st century, information is king. But computers can be hacked and files can be broken into – so a unique government initiative has been born. Five ordinary people have been selected to become Minders – the latest weapon in thwarting cyberterrorism. Transformed by a revolutionary medical procedure, the country’s most classified information has been taken offline and turned into genetic code implanted inside their heads.

Together, the five know every secret – the truth behind every government lie, conspiracy theory and cover up. In return, they’re given the chance to leave their problems behind and a blank slate to start their lives anew.

But not everyone should be trusted, especially when they each have secrets of their own they’ll do anything to protect…

John Marrs does it again…how does it even do it? Every book smashed out of the park! Despite other commitments, this book got bumped right to the top of my top be read pile and was consumed within a day or so.

I wouldn’t usually think to read this book from the description, secrets around every government lie, conspiracy theory and cover-up wouldn’t be top of my list. With the first few pages, I also began to wonder when I realised that its set in the future and has drones and automated cars etc. however, I am so glad that, due to the author I decided to read it anyway.

This was an amazing story. Really outside my normal reading, Marrs has transported us into the future where five strangers have been selected to become ‘Minders” and hold all of the classified information from the government. Together they know every secret, government lie, conspiracy theory and cover-up. This is a very scary thought in itself but, understandably, computers and files can be hacked hence the unusual initiative. Some really scary thoughts in here as well around automated cars going wrong and causing crashes etc, definitely an eye-watering look at what could become. Unsurprisingly, people find out about the ‘Minders’ and they find themselves being hunted.

I think this man may be a genius, this was a brilliant book. The plot is amazing, even to someone who wouldn’t usually be particularly interested in the synopsis. As always, this is a fast-paced, action-filled story. It’s believable and captures you right until the very lovely ending.

An intricate and complex story but the characters are well written, they are strong, believable and you feel that you know them well, they are also quite varied with different experiences and backstories. The twists and turns hold your interest well.

I would highly recommend you slipping this book to the top of your to be read pile, just like I did!
