He watches.
A woman runs alone in the woods. She convinces herself she has no reason to be afraid, but she’s wrong. A predator is stalking the women of Grant County. He lingers in the shadows, until the time is just right to snatch his victim.
With Jeffery, Sara had known that there were dozens, possibly hundreds of other women who could love him just as intensely as she did. With Will, Sara was keenly aware that she was the only woman on earth who could love him the way that he deserved to be loved.
He waits.
A decade later, the case has been closed. The killer is behind bars. But then another young woman is brutally attacked and left for dead, and the MO is identical.
He takes.
Although the original trail has gone cold – memories have faded, witnesses have disappeared – agent Will Trent and forensic pathologist Sara Linton must re-open the cold case. But the clock is ticking, and the killer is determined to find his perfect silent wife….

Having never read a book by Karin Slaughter and seeing some awesome reviews of her previous books I thought I would give this one a try. She is definitely one of my newest favourites and having realised (afterwards!) that this is part of a series I will be going back to read them from the beginning… I just need a few weeks off work to fit everything in!
Needless to say, this book can be read as a standalone and is perfectly enjoyable without any back story, I certainly didn’t feel that I was missing out on anything having missed the previous books.
The writing is not for the faint-hearted, there is a lot of detail and the descriptions of the crimes are quite disturbing at times but it wraps you in an intricate web so you are completely compelled to continue.
This book is told with two timelines, Sara and the GBI investigate the possibility of an Atlanta serial killer with ties to a historical Grant County case. The book starts with a death in a prison which leads to them investigating inconsistencies which lead to the conviction of a paedophile. The paedophile claims there have been further similar crimes while he has been incarcerated which leads intertwines with a newer investigation bringing past and present together.
This has a great plot that is easy to follow and draws you in well. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing as well!
As you would expect with a series, the characters are well developed and even without reading the other books, there is plenty enough information about them to know the basic back story.
Overall this was a great read that I couldn’t put down and kept me up well after bedtime!
