First novel in a series of six contemporary women’s fiction books about second chances and self-discovery!
Auld Acquaintance is the story of a woman in her 60s who has lost her confidence through life events, including a divorce. Anna has a part-time job in a library, and a group of good friends, but her hopes for a brighter future are growing dim.
Experience had taught her that problems were better prevented than cured.
Unexpectedly, she receives a legal letter informing her that she has inherited a piece of property in Scotland. Her first instinct is to ignore this letter as she has no knowledge of the person named as the owner.
Anna’s friends persuade her to travel to Scotland and stay until she can decide how to dispose of the farm house near Oban. So begins an adventure which opens up prospects for Anna and introduces her to a new environment and new people who help her.
I enjoyed the idea of this book more than the actual book, unfortunately. It’s a great story about amazing friendships that last a lifetime which is always lovely to read about. It shows how friendships can be stronger than family and how you can create your own family or supportive friends, not something to be sniffed at.
Set in Canada and Scotland, the scenery descriptions are unrivalled and would be great for a travel blog or book, while this was lovely it acted a bit like filler for the story here.
Anna has recently inherited a farmhouse in the remote parts of Scotland and eventually, after a lot of thought and help from her friends, travels to view it and research more of the history, how did it even end up becoming hers and who is this stranger? She meets some interesting characters and, of course, it has a happy ending.
While the premise of the book was really good, it wasn’t great for me, there is a definite lack of research, which at times was irritating and some parts dragged a little. Although, it was great to see a book of a 60-something woman where she wants to change and go on her own adventure.
I feel compelled to read the next one in the series but am going to stop here for now.
